‘Porcelain is white gold'

The Rand is the home and workplace of a very mixed bag of artists and craftspeople. In our new series Workshops in the Rand we demonstrate the variety, soak up the atmosphere, and check out what is going on. The ceramic artist Mia Bogaert from the  Ise.Dase workshop in Beigem mainly works with  porcelain. ‘What I love about porcelain is its delicate beauty and its surprisingly huge versatility. You can make it thin enough for light to shine through. This is why it has been called white gold.’ Bogaert likes to make stories up about her jewellery. Her new series is based on a story about shells on the seashore. ‘I was running across a beach, where I saw lovely shells lying all around.  Shells are beautiful, delicate and elegant and yet they are strong enough to resist the sea. They resemble porcelain is so many ways.’ (RK, sep 2012)
