Schemes to boost the capacity of the Brussels ring road have been floated since the 1990s but the Flemish Mobility Minister Ben Weyts (N-VA) is now committed to getting the work started in 2019. The programme may take 10 years to complete.

The idea is to extend the northern part of the ring road by 20 km, while creating a separation between through-traffic and local traffic, thanks to the development of three and two traffic lanes. The Flemish Authorities are seeking to reduce the number of tailbacks and accidents thanks to this initiative. Investments will also be made in the development of three new tramlines and further cycling facilities in order to help reduce number of journeys made by car in the region. The total cost is put at 2 billion euros.
