The recycling shops (kringwinkels) are set to go retro on Saturday, 16 March. An outstanding opportunity for someone looking to pick up that unique piece from the days of yore. The Rand has seven such shops offering a wide range of all kinds of vintage objects. There you can step into a wonderful world of garments, furniture and electrical appliances from days long gone. The shops have attracted a wide range of people in recent years but primarily represent a social project providing job opportunities for people who have trouble finding work. ‘We have 250 people working for us. Mainly individuals sidelined by the regular labour market who are offered a fresh opportunity here’, says Ingrid De Roo, communications officer with Televil, the agency behind the seven recycling shops in the Rand. ‘To what do we owe our success? All the objects have a soul.’ (RK, maa 2013)
