The fastest marathon runner in  the country lives in Asse. A great place for running, according to Lander Van Droogenbroeck (29). 'Away from the urban environment  in the centre of Asse, there in the surrounding villages you can discover small, peaceful roads that are great for training.’ 'The fastest? At least during the last athletics season', he stresses. He is the first one to put his performance into perspective. Is that not something to be proud of, being the fastest? 'I don't agonise about that. I don't care if I'm the fastest or the tenth fastest. The only thing that counts for me is to achieve the fastest marathon time for me personally. I refuse to let my level of satisfaction be determined by external factors such as the weather or other people's performances, so I don’t  worry about  that either. I compete only against myself. ' Lander Van Droogenbroeck works as an organisation manager for the municipality of Asse. 'My job is to organise all the processes as efficiently as possible and deploy the available resources with maximum effectiveness. I have to keep the  administrative machinery ticking over nicely.'
